ENSEMBLES - 4 PLAYERS |
| Snap!
A Snare Drum Quartet by Steve Kastuck - Grade 2 |
$12.00 |
This
is an ideal first percussion ensemble. It was written
to provide four (4) or more snare drummers their initial
performance piece. This work contains flams, flam taps,
drags, 5 and 9 stroke rolls, quarters, 8ths, 16th notes,
rim-shots, stick beats, playing on the rim and with the
snares on and off. Although this is an exciting ensemble
for beginning students, advanced students enjoy this work
as well.
NOTE: This piece is listed in the FLORIDA Music Selection,
the PENNSYLVANIA Selected Music List, the VIRGINIA VBODA
Music Selection List and is eligible for the RHODE ISLAND
Solo and Ensemble Festival. |
"'Snap'
is a percussion ensemble for an "expandable" percussion
quartet--meaning that more than one player can be assigned
to a part, if desired. The work is in common time with
a middle section of two beats per measure. Techniques
required include single strokes, flams, drags and rolls.
Additional sounds are produced with stick beats, rimshots,
and by playing on the rim, edge and center of the drums.
Each player has the option of performing on a practice
pad.
The work takes approximately two
to three minutes to perform, and is a nice training piece
for the young ensemble."

"I did take the opportunity to use SNAP! as a showcase
piece for four of the high school percussionists. It was
a GREAT success! The percussionists received rave reviews
and I have used this group to perform for the middle school
percussionists as well?." - Marlene Hall, Director of
Instrumental Music Rockland District High School, Rockland,

"SNAP!
WENT REALLY WELL, THE 7TH AND 8TH GRADERS REALLY LIKED
IT. They liked producing the different sounds on the drums,
playing on the rim, edge, center, stick beats etc. Itís
an ideal piece for the middle school and high school level
ensemble. I liked the fact that the rhythms were simple
so the students could focus on playing the music. The
students had never really played a work like this before.
They really liked it"

This number was composed as a solo and ensemble festival piece for four middle school percussionists. What makes this composition unique is that it was written for bass dram, timpani, tom-toms, and either the crown of the cymbal or a break drum. Easy to learn, fun to play, limited rehearsal time for the director and the performer. As the title suggests¡Xthis piece really moves, with many repeated rhythmic patterns interesting enough for all levels of students. |
This piece for beginning percussion quartet requires two timpani, bass drum, two tom-toms, and a brake drum or optionally the bell of a suspended cymbal. The players will be challenged by the use of unison and imitative sixteenth-note patterns. The effect of accents and dynamics as well as the timbral qualities of the brake drum played with brass mallets adds to the programmatic effect of the flight of a firefly. - Lisa Rogers - Percussive Notes Dec 2004
