"This
percussion ensemble for nine players is scored
for a trio of mallet instruments (glockenspiel,
xylophone, chimes), snare and bass drums, three
toms, tambourine, suspended cymbals, and two timpani,
and has attributes that make it ideal for the
high school level, including performance demands
appropriate to that age group. An unusual feature
in the score is the chime part, which is given
a prominent melodic role throughout and requires
the use of two mallets. Set as a stately march
with a dramatic drum beat accompaniment provided
by membranophonic percussion."
"Escape to Feredom should
prove interesting and musically satisfying to
a younger ensemble."
- John R. Raush - Percussive Notes, October 2003

Bolero Spania by John Russell |
$25.00 |
| Instrumentation: glockenspiel, xylophone, snare drum, bass drum, tom-toms(2), bongo/conga, tambourine, triangle, timpani(2).
This is the last of a group of challenging compositions written for nine players. This includes xylophone, glockenspiel, snare drum, bass drum, tom-toms, timpani, bongo/conga, tambourine, and triangle. This number was composed to introduce the eighth-sixteenth notes triplet pattern of the infamous Bolero. Because of the difficulty of patterns, this composition was written for the high school or older middle school student. Mallet parts include rolls, sixteenth notes, triplets, with a bolero feeling. The tempo is andante with the tambourine introducing the bolero rhythm and experience. The theme is developed by all of the members of the ensemble using dynamics and complex rhythms. This is an interesting, creative, and enjoyable work for both the performer and the audience . |
Arrrr! Flying Sixteenths by John Russell |

This is an incredibly fun work to play. It also makes a wonderful field show feature. Audiences also enjoy listening to this fast and active work. It is exciting and fun to play those Arrrr! Flying Sixteenths.

"This percussion ensemble piece is designed as a field show percussion feature, and although it could very well be applied to the drum line of a marching band, it could also be used in a concert setting.
Ten players are called for ( although the tri-tom part is optional), but most of the parts could be doubled, allowing for adaptability in a situation where more players are available... There are no rolls in any of the parts and eighth and sixteenth notes predominate with many driving accents. The glock and xylophone parts are more rhythmic than melodic. The chime part utilizes six "white" notes and has a few challenging measures."
