| MARIMBA
SOLOS: |
| Cognative
Dissonances by Frank Bloom - Grade 3 |
$5.00 |
A solid 4 mallet
work, that utilizes interval structure in sticking, as well as
melodic movement within the mallets. A good educational piece
for students looking to improve their four mallet technique when
switching between rolls and melodic sticking. This is an exciting
and enjoyable multi-metric work. An exceptional recital or audition
piece. This work makes a great solo for the 1st year 4 mallet
player.
NOTE: This piece is listed in the PENNSYLVANIA Selected Music
List, the VIRGINIA VBODA Music Selection List, the NORTH DAKOTA
Music Selection List and is eligible for the RHODE ISLAND Solo
and Ensemble Festival.

"This
four-mallet marimba solo for the intermediate percussionist requires
a 4-octave instrument. Technically, the performer should be proficient
with double vertical strokes and rolls, single independent strokes,
and single alternating strokes. All tempo and dynamic indications
and meter changes are clearly marked. Bloom has also indicated
some stickings. Intervals of perfect fourths and fifths create
the harmonic basis for the work. This quartal and/or quintel harmonic
structure sets up recognizable but acceptable."

"One
of my freshman students performed "Cognative Dissonances"
on a general recital program last year. She enjoyed working
on the piece and I thought that the work was pedagogically well
constructed."

"This
elementary solo for marimba is written for two mallets and is
48 measures long with one repeated section. It can be played on
a 3 1/2 octave instrument. The tempo is quarter note = 112, which
remains throughout the composition. "Flower Sonatina" serves as
a learning piece for a young player. There are a few rolls and
one key change from one sharp to two sharps, which returns to
one sharp for the last four measures. This piece would be good
for an elementary recital or a studio class presentation."

RECUERDOS
De La ALHAMBRA for Marimba and Piano arr. by Robert Wall - Grade
2-3 |
$8.00 |
This beautiful
arrangement for marimba and piano of a Francisco Tarrega guitar
solo is perfect for a recital, as a jury piece or for an audition.
Completed in March of 2001, Robert Wall has captured what Tarrega
expressed as the "..humble poetic impression, made on my soul by
the grandiose marvel of the Alhambra of GranadaÖ". This work is
full of expression and written nuances that assist the interpretive
process of the performers. The music is clearly printed on quality
paper and all page turns have been eliminated. This is an expressive
work for any performer, and one that will delight the audience.

List, the VIRGINIA VBODA Music Selection List, the NORTH DAKOTA

"This
arrangement is an excellent addition to the middle school/high school
mallet repertoire."
John Raush Percussive Notes - December 2002 |
"Bob Wall's transcription of Tarrega's "Recuerdos De La Alhambra"
is a wonderful two mallet adaptation of a great piece of literature.
Suitable for a beginning keyboard student who has command of sustained
rolls. The key signature of five flats makes for a nice transition
for those students needing experience in reading other keys and
getting a nice, balanced sound on the upper manual of the marimba.
Thumbs up for a welcomed addition to the grade
1-2 level literature!"

| DISTANT
LIGHT by Gene Fambrough - Grade 3 |
$4.00 |
|
This
grade 3 chorale should be within reach for the intermediate/advanced
high school mallet player who has an understanding of basic four-mallet
technique and sensitive musicianship. Also acceptable for beginning
four-mallet players at the college level. The performer should
be able to handle intervals of seconds to octaves that gradually
shift over an extended length of time. Written mostly in a rolled,
chorale style with one 3-measure section of song-like melody,
this solo explores relationships between A minor, B-flat major,
C major, and D minor to alternate between a beautiful and haunting
sense of "Distant Light." Low "A" marimba
required (4 1/3 octave).
|
"This
expressive four-mallet solo should be an excellent introductory
compositions for teaching four-mallet technique. Scored
for a low-A marimba, the piece starts as a choral, with all notes
being rolled. Much of the material consists of dissonant chords
that resolve to richer or triad harmonies. The solo has many meter
changes, which keep the quarter-note constant(4/4,3/4,2/4 and 5/4).
The mallet spacing stays much the same through most of the solo.
There is one phras that is three measures long in 5/4 meter, in
which the rolls change to single strokes outlining arpeggios."
