"Dance
I is a multiple percussion solo scored for three tom-toms, bass
drum, two cymbals, triangle and mounted tambourine. This two-page
solo covers a variety of meters, dynamics and rhythmic patterns.
The solo opens with a ppp-crescendo roll and moves to a rhythmic
theme on three toms. This section concludes with the tom-tom theme
being played with one hand over a sustained triangle roll. The development
section is rhythmic in nature, containing 16th-note and triplet
bursts, and cross- rhythms.
The solo is well within the level of an advanced
high school percussionist, and with the minimum setup requirements,
it would make an excellent contest solo. The numerous dynamic changes
and rhythmic material provide ample opportunity for musical expression."

DIGITAL
REFLECTIONS for TENORS AND CD by Gene Fambrough - Grade 5 |
$12.00 |
| Digital Reflections
- This solo combines rudimental percussion with electronic accompaniment
to create and exciting, challenging, and rewarding experience for
performer and audience alike. Written for a standard set of marching
"quints", this up-tempo (mm=160) solo utilizes comtemporary tenor
drum playing techniques to make a recital piece for the advanced
high school or college level student. Many intricate rhythms and
"split" patterns must be carefully coordinated with the CD accompaniment
in order to perform this work effectively. |
|
"This
solo for tenor drums and compact disc represents something of
a musical hybrid, combining as it does the rudimental genre typically
found in an unaccompanied solo format with aspects of concert
multi-percussion literature, in which taped accompaniments are
commonplace. It is written for a set of six marching tenor drums
(including two six-inch "shot"drums), although a set
of "quints" may also be used. (The composer notes that
the piece can be played by one player, or multiple players on
"matching sets of marching tenor drums.") The performer
will encounter standard rudiments(e.g., double-stroke rolls, paradiddles
and easy flam rudiments), but the piece presents challenges resulting
from movement around the drums. as found in it sweep patterns.
Good timing will be necessary to play with the CD, which contains
electronically generated percussion sounds. The latter are notated
on a second staff below the tenor part, easing some of the ensemble
difficulties in staying with the CD. A good college tenor drummer
will appreciate the challenges found in this very unusual solo."

| Jibberish
by James Hunt - Grade 4 |
$4.00 |
| JIBBERISH written for three snare drums is a short yet amusing work. You will think you are talking to Marisa Tomei in the movie "Slums of Beverly Hills" when you perform this fun work. This piece emphasizes it all: accents, dynamic control, syncopation, melodic snare phrasing, mixed meters, and of course "fun". This is an enjoyable yet challenging work for all performers at any level. |
| "Here is a short, fun piece for three snare drums to be performed by one player. Beginning with a pp dynamic, the piece quickly crescendos to a moving eighth-note pattern with shifting accents. After a fermata, a second section begins with a repetitive pattern on the low snare drum while a syncopated melodic pattern is performed on the other two drums. A final section involving mixed meters has the performer moving quickly between all three drums. The accents and shifting rhythms bring the piece to an exciting conclusion. There is much to learn from this piece including dynamics, accent control, phrasing and moving between drums smoothly. It would make a good introduction to multiple-percussion, and students looking for something unique and challenging will enjoy performing it."
