IN THE FIELD OF PERCUSSION EDUCATION"
|
| SNARE DRUM BOOKS |
| RHYTHMIC DESIGNS by Steve Kastuck |
$14.00 |
Rhythmic Designs is a collection of fifteen progressively challenging etudes. Each etude presents musical material and technique required of today's performers. There is an abbreviated notation and a poly-rhythmic anlysis section that provides a clear educational interpretation of the many basic and complex "Rhythmic Designs" found in the etudes and solos. Every etude is written as if it were a small solo so they are suitable for audition or festival. Performers will find each etude enjoyable to play, challenging and of high educational value. The three acclaimed solos include; "Two Short Pieces", "Niitake Dawn", and "The Rifleman". This method book is truly designed for the 21 st century musician and educator.
An historical tribute to Paul Price is the forward of this outstanding method book. Also included is a partial listing of notable percussionist, composers, and educators, worthy of study.
Some of the features of "Rhythmic Designs" are:
- A tribute to Paul Price who was the visionary of the percussion ensemble and today's percussion literature.
- A listing of important percussionists, composers, educators, and individuals vital to the success and development of the Percussive Arts Society.
- An abbreviated notation section often ignored or not understood.
- A Poly-Rhythmic analysis section which clearly defines "How to Interpret" the rhythms found in the etudes and solos. A MUST understanding for the contemporary percussionist.
- Fifteen etudes - each musically suitable for solo or audition and progressively challenging.
Three previously released and acclaimed as outstanding musical snare drum solos. |
"Steve, I want to sincerely thank you for sending me a copy of your method book, "Rhythmic Design". I have perused the solos and etudes, and find they are interesting, musical, challenging, and should be a valuable tool for teachers and students alike.
This particular publication is a must, for those interested in percussion history, Paul Price in particular, but also the valuable information on Daniel Morgan, Robert C. Byrd, and John Warner."
- George Frock, Internationally Recognized Composer and Educator, Austin, Texas |
"Dear Steve- Thanks so much for sending the copies of your music! I know this reply is late, but I wanted to sit down and read through everything. I will use the solos in my studio and may have some students purchase your Rhythmic Designs; an excellent set of studies that are challenging but not ridiculous. I so appreciate the complete biography of Paul Price and his accomplishments - what a valuable piece of info for me and my students. I will use this in Masterclass."
- Kristen Shiner-McGuire - Internationally Recognized Composer and Educator, Rochester, New York |
"Dear Steve, Thanks for the etudes. Just got a chance to look them over yesterday. They look good. ...Got any more? Keep em' coming... thanks for giving me the opportunity to see them. I plan on using some of them with my students."
- Michael Rosen - Internationally Recognized Performer and Educator, Oberlin, Ohio |
"Steve, Thank you so much for the book, I'm enjoying reading through it."
- Mitchell Peters - International composer, publisher and performer |
Hi Steve:
In honesty, since I receive a few new books every year, I approached this with a bit of reluctance.
Lo and behold however, I found your new text to be thoroughly pleasant in addition to being a valuable
resource for my teaching . The information on Paul Price - alone makes this a valuable resource. I certainly learned a lot about one of our leading performer/teachers.
Finally, the Snare Etudes and Solos... This is truly one of the most useful books in this genre that I have seen published in the last 10 years. Your pieces include most of what is so frequently left out of Snare Drum texts. It is good to see a collection of pieces that touch on the important areas of snare drum development, other than just physical control (chops).
The Poly Rhythmic analysis portion is extremely helpful, although I would have been happy with even a few more pages of more rhythms and perhaps a different way of organizing those very helpful examples.

Mr. Jason Koontz - Director of Percussion Studies - Eastern Kentucky University |
"I received the copy of the Rhythmic Design Book. I am using these with my students as reading etudes. They have found them challenging and interesting. Thanks!"
- Dr. Ken Broadway - Associate Professor Percussion Studies - University of Florida |
"This new book by Steve Kastuck) contains 15 graduated solo/etudes for snare drum, written in orchestral style. They would be challenging and educational for intermediate to advanced students. These excellent etudes provide many technical aspects, the mastery of which will contribute to the overall technique of the player. These include dynamic control, accents, flams, rolls and complex rhythmic patterns. In addition, each is composed as a musical solo that could be performed in a recital or for an audition. The book is dedicated to Paul Price and contains an extensive biography of his life as well as some testimonials from former students.
The book begins with a chart explaining abbreviated notation, such as a whole note with one slash indicating eighth notes. This is followed with a polyrhythmic analysis that presents complex triplet rhythms and rewrites them using a common-denominator notation that makes them easier to understand and perform. Many of these concepts are applied in the 15 etudes. Three previously published solos by Kastuck bring the book to a close and serve as the culmination of the previous material.
The well-written etudes and practical aids will make this an inspiring method book for any serious student.
- Tom Morgan PERCUSSIVE NOTES APRIL 2006 |
"Dear Steve,
The biography of Paul Price was very interesting to read – it refreshed my memory of how central Paul was to the development of percussion ensemble literature. I think that this "preface' and the other program notes, makes you and this collection an other's more human to the young percussionists that might come to own this book and work on its contents. Good Idea!
I didn't have sticks handy, but I "fingered" my way through some of the etudes, and found them musically satisfying as well as technically challenging to read. Your attention to dynamics is particularly fine – so many other publications seem to forget that controlling changes of volume (stick height) – both gradual and sudden – is an integral part of the performers arsenal of ability.
To sum up, this is a very nice collection of musically – convieved snare drum etudes, one I would use of I were still teaching!"
