| TIMPANI
SOLOS: |
   Suite
For Timpani by Duane Bierman - Grade 4-5 |
$6.50 |
|
The 'Suite for Timpani' was conceived
as a recital/jury work to showcase a performer's ability to
play in different styles while challenging their capacity for
musicality and technical prowess. The first movement demands
sensitivity to tempo and dynamic changes; the second movement
is reminiscent of an English dance or sea chanty that moves
in and out of simple and compound meters; movement three, a
ballad, is almost entirely written in rolled double stops; a
sense of phrase and rubato is essential to its success. The
final movement is fast and powerful, and calls for the performer
to play on the center of the timpani head alternately with normal
playing positon."
NOTE: This piece is listed in
the TEXAS PML, the PENNSYLVANIA Selected Music List , the VIRGINIA
VBODA Music Selection List, and is eligible for the RHODE ISLAND
Solo and Ensemble Festival. Listed in the Maryland Band Directors Association Music List 2006.

"The
four movements of Biermans suite for unaccompanied timpani
(four drums) offers an advanced high school or college timpanist
the opportunity to address a number of challenges, particularly
in regard to sticking dexterity associated with rapid movement
over all four kettles
With only a few exceptions, pitch
changes occur between movements of the suite. Other musical demands
include changing meters and the opportunity for some expressive
playing, especially in the double-stop filled, melodically inspired
third movement in which the player is encouraged to play "rubato
throughout". The sticking/movement changes encountered, particularly
in the fourth movement, should please students who enjoy performing
technically flashy literature."

"
I enjoyed teaching Duane Bierman's Timpani Suite. It's a very
musical composition as well as technically challenging.
It works well for undergraduate recitals.

| Storm
King Mountain by Steve Kastuck - Grade 4 |
$4.00 |
|
This piece incorporates dramatic
dynamic controlled contrasts and interesting combinations of
rhythmic passages to enable the achievement of the vividness
of an impressionistic solo for two drums. The use of medium
soft mallets in the adagio section, hard felt mallets in the
allegro section and two pitch changes effectively create the
timbres that enhance the sensory impression of this magnificent
mountain located in the Hudson Valley of New York State. This
is an excellent solo for teaching and developing control and
rhythmic precision. Itís an ideal solo for contests, auditions,
juries, or recitals.

the TEXAS PML, the PENNSYLVANIA Selected Music List , the VIRGINIA
VBODA Music Selection List, and is eligible for the RHODE ISLAND
Solo and Ensemble Festival. Included in the UIL Band PML.

"This
timpani solo for two drums offers the high school timpanist
technical challenges (e.g., the execution of sixteenth-note
patterns while moving rapidly between kettles) and musical challenges,
such as the performance of quarter-note triplets, frequent dynamic
changes, and the necessity to tune one drum up and down a step
while playing. The solo is illustrative of pedagogically sound
material that concentrates on the musical and technical expertise
that is especially important in concert band and orchestral
timpani performance, couched in the guise of a solo that is
sure to appeal to the student timpanist."

| Call
to Arms by Steve Kastuck - Grade 3 |
$4.00 |
|
The rapid dynamic changes, accents,
marked cross-stickings, grace notes, tempo modulations, and
precise rhythmic execution, contained in this work, will stimulate
both the performer and audience alike. This is a difficult grade
3 solo. There are no tuning changes involved and hard felt mallets
are suggested to achieve the staccato nature of the active and
consistent rhythmic driven solo for two drums. It makes an interesting
and recommended solo for contest or audition.
NOTE: This piece is listed in
the PENNSYLVANIA Selected Music List , the VIRGINIA VBODA Music
Selection List, and is eligible for the RHODE ISLAND Solo and
Ensemble Festival.

"Call
to Arms" is a much more challenging timpani solo than is
normally expected from a two-drum piece. Written at a quarter
note = 116, the solo has numerous dynamic challenges as well
as rapid sticking patterns between the drums. Meters include
4/4,12/8 and 2/4. Kastuck challenges the soloist with the meter
changes and on metric modulation.
This will be excellent for a solo contest."

| Timpani
Solo No. 1 by Alice Henry - Grade 2 |
$4.00 |
|
This is an excellent solo for the
beginning-intermediate timpanist and very suitable for any solo
competition. Contrasting dynamics along with numerous accents,
syncopation and combinations of articulate eighth note triplets
plus sixteenth not rhythms, provide interest and appeal. Students
will enjoy performing this work.
Included in the UIL Band PML.

"This
three-minute solo, ideally suited to the middle-school timpanist,
is scored for two drums. It includes ample opportunities for
the student to deal with challenges related to sticking and
movement from one drum to the other (sticking suggestions are
not provided). The solo also features rolls, interesting rhythms,
and a generous offering of dynamic changes. The re-tuning of
drums in not required.
Henry manages to work within the rather
limited boundaries dictated by the maturity of the targeted
age group to fashion a solo that provides a meaningful instructional
tool for the teacher as well as an enjoyable performance opportunity
for the student timpanist."

| Timpani
Solo No. 2 by Alice Henry - Grade 4 |
$4.00 |
|
This is an articulate rhythmic
driven three-drum solo. The abundant use of accents, contrasting
dynamics, syncopation, and poly (cross) rhythms will provide
all levels of performer an exhilarating musical experience.
This solo is appropriate for an advanced high school percussionist
and is a must for the undergraduate college percussionistís
recital repertoire.
NOTE: This piece is listed in
the PENNSYLVANIA Selected Music List , the VIRGINIA VBODA Music
Selection List, and is eligible for the RHODE ISLAND Solo and
Ensemble Festival.

"This
solo for three timpani requires no tuning changes, and hard mallets
are recommended to perform it. The tempo of quarter note = 104-126
makes some measures challenging depending on the tempo chosen.
This is a busy solo in that there are no pauses or changes of
tempo. The constant eighth- and sixteenth-note passages never
stop, and the pitches of G-D-E are resonant notes that tend to
build up after awhile. (This is not a negative comment, just an
observation). Close attention must be paid to dynamics: otherwise,
if played in a resonant room the rhythm could become unclear."

| Spring
Chant by Steve Kastuck - Grade 3 |
$4.00 |
|
This timpani solo for four (4)
drums requires no pitch changes. It is a delightful music tune
celebrating the return of spring. Time signatures alternate
between 3 / 4 and 4/4. Cross sticking are clearly marked along
with some non-cross stickings. Students and teachers will enjoy
this timpani solo.

|
"This
solo for four timpani is just 46 measures in length. The pitches
do not change, but several meter and dynamic changes will require
practice. With a tempo marked at 120bpm, there are three different
sixteenth-note sections that require cross-sticking and rapid
shifts.
This solo is appropriate for the advanced
high school student, and should be a valuable addition for the
solo contest format."

Four Movements for Timpani by Gene Fambrough - Grade 4 |
$5.00 |
|
A strong collection of individual solos for four timpani that, when performed together, will provide many aspects of timpani performance as well as a variety of musical moods. The work begins with a bold statement in the first movement, "Fanfare," continues with a light-hearted dance in 9/8 in "Scherzo" and a slow, peaceful interlude in "Chorale," and concludes with an aggressive display of technique in the final movement, "Allegro." There are no tuning changes within the movements themselves, but adjustments are required to the middle two drums in between each movement. These movements can be played individually or as a collection, and are suited for the advanced high school or beginning/intermediate college player. |
"This solo for four timpani features four short movements that contrast in content and style. "Fanfare," is a majestic slow march based on a B-flat chord(F,B-flat, D,F). Movement two, "Scherzo," is in 9/8 and is a quick dance, written at 128mm. Pitches for this movement are F, B-flat, C,F. The third movement "Chorale," is a slow setting with numerous rolls. Pitches are the same as movement two. The composition closes with a fast "Allegro," and like the first movement has a few contrapuntal phrases. One hand plays a pedal of steady eigth notes in the center of the head, while the other hand plays the melodic material in the normal area. There are no tuning changes within the movements."

IROQUOIS for four timpaniby Steve Kastuck - Grade 4+ |
$4.00 |
|
This grade 4+ spirited timpani solo should please the audience and performer alike. There are no tuning changes and hard felt mallets are used throughout the work. A challenging and enjoyable solo, IROQUOIS will provide the performer a chance to demonstrate their musicianship as well as mastery of the timpani.
|
"The composer says that this solo for four timpani is written in the spirit of actress Angelina Jolie. The drums are tuned to G, B-flat, C and D, and the pitches do not change throughout the piece. The performance notes specify hard flet mallets. Written in 4/4 at a temp of quarter = 76, the soloist is presented with several technical challenges. The solo opens with a seven-measure modal theme, followed by short phrases seperated by fermati. There are sticking patterns that must be worked out in order to play the triplet figures cleanly. There are also some notated muffling patterns, each occuring in rapid passages. This is an excellent solo for technical development, and suitable for contests or recitals."
